How to Start a Blog

Maybe today is the day you finally make the move and start a blog.  But not just any blog, you want a blog that will be able to make you money.  You have read about other people who started a blog on the side then turned it into a full-time income, so why not you?  Blogging is what changed my life and in the past 10 years, I have helped countless others start their home business in Internet Marketing by starting a simple blog.  Let Me Show You How!

Getting Started

Blogging has become so easy and so affordable now.  Plus there is always a demand for new content, new views, and new ideas.  Your ideas, your thoughts, and your passions can help others while they make you money.  So there is no reason why you can’t start a blog today. You Just Need To Start.  Take that First Step Today.

The greatest part of all this is the startup cost.  That’s what great about the Internet. It allows the average person start a business for little money upfront.  Plus, it doesn’t matter where you live. If you have access to the Internet, you have the ability to start blogging and start making money. You do need to make sure you can commit just a few hours a week to get it up and running.  But not much.  It’s as flexible as you are. Start small, get your feet wet and build it from there.

If I was just starting out again, I would go with Hostgator.  They are one of the best known hosting sites with a proven track record. I always go for the annual plan because it saves me money in the long run.  The longer you pay for, the lower the price is per month.  With HostGator, plans begin at less than $5 a month.

Yes, you can go cheaper, even Free, but it will cost you as you go along.

As I said at the start, we want to start a blog that will make money, so having your own blog on your own domain is the only way to go.  Paying for your hosting, such as through HostGator, is a MUST.  With your own website and domain, you can run any of your own advertisements, your own affiliate links, plus do direct advertising, etc. You build up your brand and get to be the one people start to look for.

When you build your website on a free blogging platform, you are not in charge of anything and can not make any money with any kind of advertising or affiliate links. Having your own website and domain, makes you look professional and serious.   A self-hosted WordPress blog on HostGator builds your credibility instantly.

Where Do We Start?

    • Register Your Domain Name
So let’s start there.  You need a good domain name.  Something that reflects your idea, passion or topic. Use the HostGator Domain Name page to play around with names.
Making it a “Dot Com” is preferred. Make it one word, no dashes or hyphens. You want to make it easy to remember and to spell.
      .
    • Buy Hosting For Your Blog
Like I said above, the Starter Plan is the cheapest if you are planning to start with only one blog.  I have never been able to keep anything to just one so I would normally choose the Business Plan. It has a few more bells and whistles I think make it worth the cost up front. You will want privacy and you will want it SSL (https vs http). If you start with the cheapest plan, you can always upgrade at any time as you see the benefits.Being a new customer, HostGator has some smokin’ prices for you, so I would go for at least 12 months for best prices, 36 months if you can do it.  Don’t worry, HostGator does have a 45-day money back guarantee. Right Now, the Starter Plan for 36 months is $74.00!   Not sure when that will change, so I would go for it now!
      .
    • Install WordPress on HostGator
HostGator offers two ways for you to install WordPress on your domain.
Manual or Quick InstallI love things easy and so we will be using the QuickInstall method on HostGator to install WordPress. Some people call it the “5 Minute Install” because in 5 minutes you will WordPress up and running!1) Login to your HostGator web panel. Under services/Software click on QuickInstall
      2) On the QuickInstall page, you need to select “WordPress’ on the left side. Skip the offer for services to set up the theme.  you can do it by following this guide (It’s easy & doesn’t take much time)
      3) On the next page, drop-down and select the domain on which you want to install WordPress blog. Being the starter plan, you only have one to choose from!
      4) Here you can decide where you want to install WordPress. The root of the directory or under the subdomain.
      Example:

      • Root Directory: https://www.askmrmark.com (recommended)
      • Subdirectory: https://www.askmrmark.com/blog

      5) Click on “next” and configure rest of settings.

Make sure that you don’t use “admin” as username. Too easy to hack. Make it your email address or make it a nickname. Don’t make it easy!

      6) Before hitting the magic “Install” button, double check to make sure you have done everything right. Rolling things back later is not an easy task!
      7) While you wait for HostGator Quick Install to set up your WordPress blog, it might try to upsell you by offering other services.  Skip them and let it do its thing.
      8) It will take few minutes, and once your WordPress blog is installed, you will get an email with your dashboard link, username & password.
Your WordPress dashboard will be “domain.com/wp-admin” (Replace domain.com with your actual domain name).

With WordPress, there are many different themes available. Some free, some charge.  Depends on what you want and what you want the blog to look like and perform as.  Many different plugins are also available, most of them are free and will help your blog do amazing things.

You will find the WordPress community very open, friendly and willing to help you with any question or problem you may have.  Check out Meetup.com to see if there is a WordPress Meetup or group near you for further friendship, support, and education.
