This is a popular question. Why do you need to be using social media? Because that’s what people are using for information and research. Over 70% of all purchasing decisions today, begin with a review of the Internet. They want to know more about what they are about to buy. They want to know what others think, what others say about it.
You want to be known as the “go to” person for ____. To be that person, you need to be known on sites like Twitter, YouTube, Linkedin, and other social sites.
We are moving to a Internet Social Society where people go to the Internet for referrals and recommendation rather than just taking the salespersons word for it. We can go to websites and see what others are thinking about anything. Plus we get to leave our opinions and thoughts about anything, including purchases.
People who participate on these websites get to be “experts’ in the eyes of some viewers. The viewer starts to look for a name or a handle and they know “this person is the expert, I have seen his reviews before” and will buy or not buy based on that “expert’s” opinion.
How do you get to be an expert? By being where they are and by participating in the conversation. By being honest and real. You “tweet” valuable information to others about the topic at hand. Talking about your experiences on YouTube and by hooking up with the right contacts on Linkedin.
Remember watching a Chuck Norris movie and thinking “he’s the best”? When he was at his peak in Hollywood, the world thought he was the best in the business. In reality, he was ranked 8th in the world of karate. Meaning there were 7 other people better than he was in the karate/self defense marketplace. Nobody knew their name because they were not marketing themselves thru the right channels at the time. Chuck Norris was the de facto “expert” in Karate..
You may not be the best or the brightest in your niche, but you can be the expert if you work social media right. You start by getting accounts on the popular social media sites; Twitter, YouTube, FaceBook, etc… If at all possible, use the same name/handle for each account. or as close to each as you possibly can get. get on and look around. Watch how others are doing it and follow the ones you like.
I will go over the Social Media Marketing Etiquette later. I just wanted to get the answer to the big question out there.
